Experience Brijuni National Park in autumn by renting a house in Croatia

As the summer hustle and bustle on the coast slowly subsides, a very special time of year begins on the Brijuni Islands

The sun bathes the pine forests in golden light, the days are pleasantly mild and the evenings quiet; only the sound of the sea and the rustling of the deer accompany the walk.

Taking the ferry from Fažana takes you in just a few minutes to a world that is so close and yet so different: a national park full of history, Mediterranean scents and untouched nature.

Especially in autumn, when there are fewer visitors, the Brijuni Islands  unfold their full magic, ideal for those seeking peace, culture and authentic experiences.

Nature and history on the Brijuni

The Brijuni Islands are a living history book in the middle of the sea. Traces of dinosaurs, Roman villas, Byzantine mosaics and Venetian fortresses tell of over 5000 years of civilization.

At the same time, the national park is a refuge for animals and plants: more than 600 Mediterranean and exotic species grow here, including one of the oldest olive trees in the Mediterranean, over 1600 years old.

Between oak forests and open clearings, you'll encounter deer, mouflon, and peacocks roaming freely on the islands. Especially in autumn, when nature slows down and the colors intensify, Brijuni  acts like a stage where history and nature combine to create a unique experience.

Experience autumn on Brijuni

While in summer day-trippers arrive on every ferry  , autumn belongs to those seeking peace and authenticity. The paths are emptier, the light softer, the evenings longer, and it is precisely then that the Brijuni Islands  unfold their full magic.

Anyone cycling through pine forests or strolling along the seafront now will experience the special tranquility that only autumn can offer. Deer and stags appear in large numbers during the quiet hours of twilight, and the sunset over the Adriatic transforms the island into a spectacle of gold and orange.

For many visitors, it is this blend of nature and tranquility that makes autumn the most beautiful time to experience Brijuni !

Activities on Brijuni

The Brijuni Islands  are car-free, and that's precisely what makes a visit so special. Bicycles and golf carts can be rented directly at the harbor and are the best way to explore the islands. The well-maintained paths lead past Mediterranean gardens, centuries-old olive trees, and offer frequent views of the sea.

A highlight is the 18-hole golf course , one of the oldest on the Adriatic coast, which offers spectacular views and presents a real challenge. Right next to it is a small safari park  , home to zebras, llamas, ostriches, and even an elephant – an experience for children and adults alike.

The island also offers many tranquil spots for those seeking peace and quiet: a botanical garden with over 200 plant species , secluded coves for relaxation, and picnic areas beneath pine trees. In autumn, when temperatures are mild and the paths are empty, these activities take on a special ease... relaxed, unhurried, and full of nature experiences!

Culture and history of Brijuni

The Brijuni Islands  are not only a natural paradise, but also a stage for history. Even the Romans appreciated this special place: the wealthy Gaius Laecanius Bassus had a magnificent villa built here, complete with thermal baths, temples, and mosaics – a luxury resort of antiquity, the remains of which can still be admired today in Verige Bay.

Later, in the 19th century, the Viennese industrialist Paul Kupelwieser transformed the islands into a fashionable spa and holiday destination. Thanks to the help of Robert Koch  , malaria was eradicated, exotic animals were introduced, and magnificent hotels were built, making Brijuni  a meeting place for the European elite.

The islands also have a long and storied past: Between 1947 and 1979, President Josip Broz Tito  used Brijuni as his summer residence. Here he entertained heads of state, queens, and Hollywood stars, organized lavish parties, and transformed the islands into an exclusive retreat for the world's elite. Even today, the legendary cockatoo Koki evokes memories of this era, cheerfully squawking "Tito, kako si?" through the park.

Thus, Brijuni combines three eras as a hideaway for the rich, powerful and creative, making a visit a unique journey through time.

Slow travel and autumn benefits

Autumn on the Brijuni Islands  is the ideal time of year to consciously enjoy the pace of life. No queues, no crowds, just nature and the feeling of having a piece of paradise almost entirely to yourself. Walks through quiet pine forests, bike rides along empty coastal paths, or a glass of Istrian Malvazija at sunset – that's what makes autumn so special.

The temperatures are mild, the sea is often still pleasantly warm, and the air is clear and fresh. Instead of a hectic summer schedule, guests now enjoy the freedom to plan their own day: sleeping in, having a leisurely breakfast, taking a trip to the islands, and then returning to their own villa, where a crackling fireplace or heated pool provides cozy evenings.

This makes autumn a hidden gem for anyone who wants to experience Istria in its most authentic form, with peace, style and plenty of space for genuine encounters.
